The Barnacle Vase is an incredible creation depicting real ocean life. The Vase is wheel thrown. The Barnacles with a rim of 'coral ruffles' are added by hand with a barnacle glaze and shino glaze on the corals. Each piece is unique and approximately 5 inches by 5 inches. The Barnacle glaze is a chemical reaction between multiple glazes that result in a unique rough and bubbled surface that resembles real barnacles. (Click on pic above for larger view). These are high-fired for maximum durability, with a Porcelain mix. Each piece is lead free. Hand-washing is recommended. As with all hand crafted pottery the coloring and size will vary from piece to piece, making each piece a one-of-a-kind. Our potter's (Lois) statement: "Sun, sand, and surf make for wonderful play, and some of my happiest memories are the weeks spent at the beach with my children when they were young. Summer play time met year-round work time, when I took wonderful memories of the beach home with me and developed a style of pottery to remind me of those carefree days. To create my pieces, I envision objects that are pulled from the ocean. The barnacle glaze that I have developed is the result of years of research and testing. It is a unique combination of three glazes that, upon firing produces an intense reaction that results in an unusual barnacle-like result. The barnacles, which seem to have just emerged from the ocean, have the appearance and texture of the real thing, but are much more durable."
